MANKO: These lyrics spilled out into my notebook while I was at least half asleep working a telemarketing job in the summer of '85. That November I walked in on a jam session Amphetamine Library was having after watching Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory together, and opened to the lyrics in my notebook, and the whole song emerged almost exactly as it appears here. We caught the second performance of it on a boombox and never made any significant revisions since.
lyrics
I'm here for you, you're not here for me
The question loiters, lingers in the brain's repository
It's like a blood donation, bloody trail behind my tears
Nothing but helpless anguish distancing the silent fears
Something in me, something in you, something in summer nights
Somebody falls, the window calls, salvation in pure memory
Can I escape cheap love and hate that haunt me late at night?
You're looking good, I'm feeling tired, let's just turn out the light
And turn on the dark.
There was a girl with glowing eyes, I still see her now as then
We had a night between the stars I thought would never end
Something inside the other side between the flesh and fear
We meet again, we just pretend, we just pretend each other disappear
In times to come the earth will burn like falling satellite
Numeric counts, trivial amounts, distriction out of sight
Meaningless prayers like spirit flares, apocalyptic fright
You're looking sharp, it tears my heart, let's just turn out the light
And turn on the dark.
