about

MANKO: I was a teenager in a turbulent and rocky relationship. A regrettable title nowadays, especially considering how many people I've loved who live with bipolar affective disorders since, but this is what we called the song back then, so that's its damn name. Plus some of y'all young'uns might not remember all the "________ Make Better Lovers" bumperstickers of the seventies. While I've never been diagnosed with depression or mania myself, I do think my emotional range is wider than average, and it's caused me plenty of difficulty (and brought me plenty of joy) over the decades. While the lyrics are the cynicism and sarcasm of the teenager I was, I do still maintain that those of us who are wired for greater emotional intensity can, if we master self-control and don't live as slaves to our emotions, be the best people you'll ever wake up next to.

The opening line is from Samuel Delany's "Dhalgren," perhaps the epigraph? And "The Limit" was a poppy and popular local band in those days; they were nice enough guys, but we called them "The Limited" and there's a dig at them in the last verse.

lyrics

Don't confuse reality with what is true
I've been looking for somebody worth lying to
We can stay up late ripping into each other
Manic Depressives make better lovers
Give me one more chance, just a little more time
How far from here to the finish line?

Now don't confuse reality with what is true
You ignore me and I'll ignore you
I'm an angel, I'm a devil and we're both undercover
Manic Depressives make better lovers
Don't talk to me about the institution
They're one short step from the final solution

We know how to get high, we can really go down
Don't waste your time with the mediocre
Here and now is the band, breaking glass is the sound
Don't even bother with the limited joker
Take my hand and don't fight back
You're all I've got, you're the one I need
We can see each other through the cracks
